This is my first, and potentially my last post about FOX’s “The Following” (Mondays at 9PM EST).
The show started out with so much promise. I remember really liking, not loving the pilot episode, and being verrrry curious as to which way they were gonna go with it, and for 5.75 episodes I actually DID love it.
Then the last 11 minutes of episode 6 happened, and thus was born the weekly portrayal of the FBI as bumbling idiots who were outsmarted at every turn by Joe Carroll and his followers. It’s as if they have more tactical know-how, resources, and cunning than the FBI/CIA and Seal Team Six combined. It’s been downright insulting to the collective intelligence of the show’s viewers, and I have grown increasingly frustrated with each episode.
It’s a shame, too, because Kevin Bacon, Natalie Zea, James Purefoy, Shawn Ashmore, and Valorie Curry especially, all give powerful performances. (Emma is far and away my favorite character.) The problem is the material they’re being given to work with. I really feel this could have been better if it had aired on FX.
Now, my dilemna is whether or not to tune in for these last 4 episodes, or walk away before one of my TVs ends up going through a window. What do you guys think? Do I hang in, or cut bait?
RATING: 7.5/10 Episodes 1 – most of 6 / 3.5 – 5/10 Episodes 7 – 11
