When crafting a “One man vs a terrorist army” movie, you have to tread carefully, leaning more toward Die Hard than bad Seagal action. Fortunately, Olympus Has Fallen goes the direction of the former. Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Replacement Killers) is a master of the action film. The pacing is always good, the mayhem loud and in-your-face, and the dialogue snappy. This movie is no exception!
Gerard Butler has never been better, finally getting back to kicking asses/unleashing Hell like he did in 300 and Law Abiding Citizen (yis, he was a villain in that, I KNOW!! Still…badass!), and hopefully staying away from the rom-com garbage he’s been attached to as of late.
Aaron Eckhart as The President is great, as usual, and Morgan freeman is well…Morgan Freeman. In other words, when he is forced to step in as President, you can’t help but pump your fist in excitement!
But the toughest person in the movie is hands down Melissa Leo, as the Secretary of Defense. Unwavering in her commitment to give nothing to the Koreans who have seized control of the White House Bunker, even under threat of a vicious beating, she may have been my favorite character.
Olympus Has Fallen is a good old-fashioned Us vs. Them kickass action movie. Allthough there are one or two VERY Die Hard moments, they don’t detract from what is one of the most entertaining movies I’ve seen in awhile, and I think the ladies will like it too. Go see it, have some fun, and enjoy!
