After the debacle that was Hellbilly Deluxe 2 and yet ANOTHER remix album, Rob Zombie really needed to give us something good for the first time since 2007’s live album. Well, ask and ye shall receive. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor.
Opener “Teenage Nosferatu Pussy” (lovely, right?) is NOT a great song, so let’s not even go there. But “Dead City Radio” has a killer groove over some crazy lyrics that will stick in your heads for days!
“Revelation Revolution”, “Ging Gang Gong De Do Gong De Laga Raga”, and “Behold, The Pretty Filthy Creatures” embody the Rob Zombie sound of old, and John 5 puts together some great riffage on all of them.
“White Trash Freaks” and “Lucifer Rising” also bring the thunder, the latter sounding like the evil twin of “Supercharger Heaven” from 1995, and Rob does one HELLACIOUS cover of “We’re An American Band” from Grand Funk Railroad. The song is given a much-needed facelift, and has never sounded better!
The track that really caught my attention though, was “Rock and Roll (In A Black Hole)”. At first it sounds almost like Violator-era Depeche Mode, and is hauntingly beautiful. Then at 1:34 the pummeling begins, before going eerily quiet on the verse again. Without a doubt, this is my favorite song on the disc.
Closer “Trade In Your Guns For A Coffin” is also one of the heavier songs and ends things VERY WELL.
I have to admit, at first listen I absolutely hated this record except for the last few songs. Then, I gave it a second listen, and was enthralled. By the third, I was making wedding plans with it, before deciding we would just live together in sin. Welcome back, Rob! GO AND BUY THIS ALBUM RIGHT NOW!!
STANDOUT TRACKS: Every song but “Teenage Nosferatu Pussy”
