Rod Stewart – Time

After a decade of delving into the Great American Songbook, Rod Stewart returns with his first new album of original songs, Time. Clearly inspired by his third marriage to (surprise surprise) model Penny Lancaster, there is a wealth of love songs here, and Rod the Mod has never sounded happier.

First two tracks “She Makes Me Happy”, and “Can’t Stop Me Now” are the songs that were made to get you going first thing in the morning, smiling all the way. “Brighton beach” tells a story of a pre-famous Rod Stewart as a busker, and is a song hearkening back to a simpler time.

“Beautiful Morning” is another uptempo number that should be a single very soon, or else someone at the record company’s probably gonna get fired. Fun, fun song!

After a self-described “dark period for twenty years”, Rod says that writing his autobiograpy gave him the impetus to start writing again. Songs like “Live the Life” and “Finest Woman”, and title track “Time” seem to indicate the clouds have parted and the sun is shining brightly now.

There is no shortage of love and devotion on Time, and quite frankly, this is his finest work since Out Of Order and Vagabond Heart, two of my favorite albums. If writing the book, and the love of a good woman is what it took to get fun-loving, party-singing Rod Stewart back, then I, like many of his longtime fans, am eternally grateful. A truly gifted singer and songwriter, it’s nice to hear that fire and passion again.
