So, I watched the latest episode of American Horror Story: Coven last night. And I freakin’ loved it! I thought it fitting that with it being Halloween and all, I write about the show that, to me, embodies what Halloween is all about.
I do want to say that I’ve been watching the show since its inception. I loved the first season, I kinda liked last season, and this one is stacking up to be the best one yet. I can only applaud the writers for it. I cannot think of a show in history that has taken this approach, with a completely different story each season, while continuing to employ much of the same cast. I can only imagine the meetings these guys have when they pitch ideas.
Season one had a house that keeps any souls that die in it around to co-mingle with the living occupants. And having a severely dysfunctional family live in the “Murder House” only magnified the insane hilarity that ensued.
Season two. Wow. What can I say about season two? Let’s see. You have a nun running an insane asylum, whose lurid, lustful, and let’s face it, insane past, is never really gone from her mind. You add a former Nazi “doctor” that’s in charge of the medical side of things, while basically continuing his former job in secret over in that ward. A suave, yet slightly broken Monsignor with his sights set on the Vatican, overseeing the whole operation. Add in a serial killer or two, some freakishly weird characters, a demon, and some aliens and you have a bit of a mish-mash of a season. Sorry, I wanted to love it, but I dare say it was a little over the top. Even for these guys
.
That brings us to season three. And like I said, it’s shaping up to be the best of the bunch in my opinion. I’m curious to see which way it goes. I will say that by having Jessica Lange as the Supreme Witch and Angela Bassett as her voodoo loving, immortal nemesis, this SHOULD be a home run. Oh, and did I mention Kathy Bates as a 200-plus year old famous sadist who’s now the maid for the coven? Yeah, like I said. Home run.
