It’s not even a month and a half since my world got rocked from Sons of Anarchy. In the past four years I have depended on FX’s Justified to calm me down and lull me into a false sense of security, so that I can get used to the idea that SOA is gone for a while. And every year it has succeeded swimmingly. But, after watching the first two episodes I am a little disconcerted. First, I should mention, that apparently Elmore Leonard died. That sucks. The guy was a super talented writer with a penchant for GREAT characters. I only learned this when the show did a 12 minute retrospective of him before the premiere. So now I figure that all the people responsible for this television show built around one of his best characters, will wanna make sure that this is one of the best seasons on record. To really give him a nice send-off.
Which brings us to Season Five. Justified’s cast has been so freaking good for so long that the addition of Michael Rapaport should be an automatic plus. Sprinkle in some delicious Amy Smart, and by all accounts, you should have one hell of a TV show. Ms. Smart has only just appeared, so I will leave her out of this. But, Michael Rapaport, in my opinion, has been miscast. He’s such a good dramatic actor, and as another deputy Marshall, or even a normal villain, would have been perfect. But as an alligator skinning, trailer park hillbilly crime lord? Not even he might be able to pull this off. But, this show hasn’t exactly followed conventional story lines in the past. The fact that pretty much every one of the main characters is back means that it will probably gel in another week or two. So I am going to say that it should still be a great season, regardless of what we saw in episode one.
I’m not a betting man, wait, that’s not true, yes I am. Anyway, mark my words, Raylan Givens will not disappoint. I guarantee that. As long as the show continues to follow him, we should be fine. By the end of the season, I’m sure Elmore Leonard will be smiling down from whatever heaven writers go when they die.
