Nashville Pussy – Up The Dosage

NASHVILLE PUSSY 1

It’s been nearly five years since the last NASHVILLE PUSSY album, From Hell to Texas. And while the band certainly wasn’t resting on its laurels, five years can seem like a lifetime in the world of hard rock and heavy metal, no? Well, they are back and rockin’ with new album Up the Dosage, 13 hard drinkin’, hard fucking-style anthems made for all-night raging, out now via Steamhammer/SPV Records. My first introduction to this band came in 1999 at a show with MARILYN MANSON and I remember thinking, “Who the FUCK is this band with balls for days?!?”, and it’s nice to see they haven’t lost a single bit of edge since then.

Ruyter Suys’ guitar crunch is alive and well on just about every track, particularly on the one-two punch of “Everybody’s Fault But Mine” and masturbatory anthem “Rub It to Death”. Switching to the acoustic side, “Before the Drugs Wear Off” is one of two songs that are equal parts catchy AND funny, the other being the country rocker “Hooray For Cocaine, Hooray For Tennessee”. Both of these had me in stitches, and I had to play them back several times due to several bouts of, “Did they just? No!” Great stuff! Blaine Cartwright is in rare form on this record, and ya gotta love him for it. Another great, great song is “The South’s Too Fat to Rise Again”. As a transplanted New Yorker now living in Dallas, TX I can say from firsthand observations that this is 100% true!! But humor aside, the kickass riffs and even more kickass solo on this one made it an instant favorite for me.

The bullet train leaves the station once more for “Spent” and “Pillbilly Blues”. I love it when this band just plugs in and goes fast and loud. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Rock & Roll ain’t brain surgery. Don’t overthink it, just drink up and enjoy! Title track “Up the Dosage” has one of the best licks on the disc and is one they’ve just gotta play live on tour. “Beginning of the End” is another fun, up-tempo number. And “Till the Meat Falls Off the Bone” injects a lil’ swamp boogie into the proceedings. Ruyter even takes lead vocals for the short but sweet (47 seconds!) “Taking It Easy” before that gives way to her own composition of “White and Loud”. This is interesting because it’s got an ever-so-slight hint of early BLACK SABBATH in the riffs.

Fittingly enough, the last song on Up the Dosage is called “Pussy’s Not a Dirty Word”, which is not only my absolute favorite, but it’s got this sick AC/DC groove and is the perfect way to end things. People are way too friggin’ uptight, and the fact that everywhere I look I see the “S”’s in PUSSY turned into dollar signs just makes me laugh. It’s heavy music, it’s not SUPPOSED to be safe, warm, and fuzzy!! And if it offends you…GOOD!! Regardless, go out and snag a copy of Up the Dosage, you won’t be sorry. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some shots to throw back.

STANDOUT TRACKS: “Pussy’s Not a Dirty Word”, “Up the Dosage”, “The South’s Too Fat to Rise Again”, “Hooray For Cocaine, Hooray For Tennessee”, “Before the Drugs Wear Off”

RATING: 8.5/10
