AHHHHH!!!! BLAST BEAT, BLAST BEAT, AND BLAST BEAT!!! Prepare your neck for breaking from the speeds at which HOUR OF PENANCE will fuck you with their new album Regicide, . album has no intro whatsoever, and immediately throws you into a dizzying array of pummeling drums and riffs. What really stands out is the outstanding drumming by James Payne, and that may be why the album relies a little too much on blast beats and lacks the obscure riffs and taps of other tech death bands such as BRAIN DRILL, or BEYOND CREATION. And in no way is this a bad thing.
As I said the opening track “Desecrated Souls” immediately slams into gear with mosh inducing speeds that will get anybody moving in the pit. The technicality is impressive but the solos are a lot more melodic, more in tune with melo-death bands such as THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, or PATHS OF POSSESSION. Tracks five and six (“Resurgence of The Email”, and “Sealed into Ecstasy” respectively)borderline on deathcore, but in no way is that a negative, although there are about five total deathcore bands that are any good. It’s not the chugginess that people hate, more likely about 80% death and 20% core, just enough to give it some flavor without going overboard into douchebag territory. The end track “Theogany” starts off with a sweet groove that shifts into the speed blasts that the band is known for.
Any fan of death metal should check this out, a current band that is fast as hell without going overboard into DRAGONFORCE territory. I recommend picking up Regicide if you’re into blaring loud music in your car and speeding down the highway. Pick up the album, and check HOUR OF PENANCE on tour this summer with SEPTICFLESH, FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE, and NECRONOMICON.
