A Pre-Tour Check-In With LandPhil From Cannabis Corpse!!

CANNABIS CORPSE are going to embark on a headlining tour across the United States in a few days. The tour begins November 28 in Wilmington, NC and will run for a month with a stop here in Dallas on December 2 at Club Dada. Support on all dates comes from MAMMOTH GRINDER, INANIMATE EXISTENCE, as well as regional and local special guests. Made up of Phil “LandPhil” Hall (bass, vocals), Brent Legion (guitar), and brother Josh “Hallhammer” Hall (drums) the trio gave us From Wisdom to Baked earlier this year, which is sure to be on many a Top 10 Death Metal albums list at year’s end. A&GS caught up with LandPhil to maybe get a glimpse into what we can expect on this run, among other things. Take a look:

CANNABIS CORPSE BAND 1Amps: You’ve got Chris Barnes (SIX FEET UNDER), Trevor Strnad (THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER), and Digestor (GHOUL) guesting on this record. How much fun was having those guys record with you?

LandPhil: It was a dream come true really, it’s obvious that I am a huge Chris Barnes fan. The album The Bleeding has to be one of the greatest death metal albums of all time. In my eyes he can do no wrong vocally, he truly sounds like an animal behind the mic. Trevor is no slouch either; he is like a metal encyclopedia and really knows how to structure a song to make it really pop.

Amps: What kinds of shenanigans can the fans expect on this upcoming tour?

LandPhil: I know our resident bud monster is going to come out to party on this tour (laughs)! He eats stoners so everyone should keep their head on a swivel… We have a great set list that covers a lot of ground; hopefully we got a little something for all the death metal weed smokers out there.

Amps: December 2 here in Dallas will be my first time seeing you. Are there any safety precautions I should take, or immunizations I should get beforehand?

LandPhil: (Laughing) just get your weed tolerance up! We don’t have time to put up with lightweights!

GDOB2-30CH-001.cdrAmps: When it comes to the songs in CANNABIS CORPSE how do they take shape? Spontaneous jams, or guys bringing in demos/ideas?

LandPhil: My brother Hallhammer and I make tons of demos, I like listening to ideas to give me a better idea of what it will sound like on an album, once we have made the demos we go in and start hammering out the actual album, then once that is finished we pick the songs we are going to play live. CANNABIS CORPSE has always been my brother and I writing the songs, it’s a family affair.

Amps: What does everyone do outside of the band for fun?

LandPhil: I play tons of music and tour as much as possible, I have two other bands that go out and play shows all the time (MUNICIPAL WASTE, IRON REAGAN ) so that keeps me busy. I love writing and performing metal so I am happy to be working as much as I am.

Amps: How does it feel to hear such praise as “it’s a big step up for the band”, or “it’s a high point for the group’s discography?”

LandPhil: I try to make every record better than the last one; I learn so many things every time I make an album that I in turn apply to making the next one. So hopefully each album gets better and better. I never want to let any of the fans down in any way. I think that if I am unhappy with something then the fans will be too. I never let something that I do not like slip through the cracks.

Amps: Did you do anything different for this album as far as songwriting goes?

CANNABIS CORPSE BAND 3LandPhil: We brought in a lot of guest musicians on this album. Aside from Chris Barnes and Trevor Strnad we also brought in guest guitarists like Ralph Santolla (DEICIDE, TOXIK) and Kevin Quirion (DEICIDE). It is really awesome to hear someone put their own ideas on my music. It always ends up being something different then I had imagined, all those guys did a great job, and I was stoked.

Amps: Who would be your dream bands to tour with?

LandPhil: All the fathers of death metal from the 90’s! I am a big fan of CANNIBAL CORPSE, DEATH, OBITUARY, DEICIDE, CARCASS, etc.

Amps: Tell me ONE thing about you that no one knows.

LandPhil: Ummmm, I have a huge obsession with professional wrestling? I think everyone knows that though.

Amps: Say something to all your fans out there.

LandPhil: Thanks for the support homies! We couldn’t do it without you!
