Polish metal band NEOLITH return with their fourth full-length album, Izi.Im.Kurnu-Ki. Uhhh…..what? Hey, don’t ask me, man. All I know is that the record’s been getting a lot of play here in the War Room at A&GS HQ as of late. Considering all the members have been on the Polish Extreme Metal scene for a very long time, it should come as no surprise that the songwriting is very high quality, and every bit as good as fellow countrymen HATE’S latest opus. The electronic samples sprinkled throughout the disc also add a nice touch. I know some people can’t get behind that, but I think it really adds something to the overall mix. If anything, my only gripe is that there’s an intro and an interlude so we really only get eight full songs.
One of these “Chariots of the Gods” was the runaway favorite here, with its potent blend of buzz saw riffs and atmospheric programming. Again, I don’t get why some people seem to be so upset with this because I really dig it. “E.A. Firebringer” is one of the album’s heaviest compositions while leadoff track “Of the Angel and His Orison” mines BEHEMOTH territory but certainly not in a stealing or ripping off way. The slow, deliberate stalking pace at the start of “Enlil” coupled with Grzegorz “Levi” Łukowski’s deep, dark vocals had me convinced we were on the slow train to Hell, but it turns meaty, mean and dirty on the proverbial dime. And I like that.
“Ire Through Fire” was a tough nut to crack the first few listens simply because I wasn’t totally sure how I felt about it. I guess if there was one song that had to grow on me then this was it. It certainly has the bludgeoning riffs and blast beats necessary to cause injury, but it just took a few spins for it to smack me just the right way. Another standout was “One Is the Truth and the Truth Is the One”, a song I couldn’t get enough of from beginning to end and is already on several of my Angry Little Man playlists! There are some crazy things happening during “Are We the Lost Ones?” I’m not fully sure how to describe it; you’ll have to listen for yourselves, just trust me.
Closing the disc is “Khufu Arise!” that oozes forth like something ready to crush the life out of you, a musical boa constrictor if you will. This was yet another favorite for me right away. All told NEOLITH has one hell of a record on their hands and I am glad my good friend Tito turned me onto them a while back. Izi.Im.Kurnu-Ki is out now on Non Serviam Records and I suggest you pick it up. If you’re looking for a very interesting twist on Blackened Death Metal, you’re gonna love this one.
