Ramming Speed – No Epitaphs

RAMMING SPEED COVER

So, I first got turned onto RAMMING SPEED two years ago by the wonderful Kelly at Prosthetic Records. I thought then, as I do now, that these boys are on a mission to tear shit up, plain and simple. And I was fortunate enough to see them at Three Links in Dallas last year where they did just that. Their music just rips through you, and their live set is a fucking party with all of you invited. So with that in mind I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the new album No Epitaphs (Prosthetic Records) to see what’s what with these maniacs!

As soon as you strap in the ride takes off like one of the big attractions at Six Flags, all piss and vinegar, the band going batshit from the opening notes of “No Forgiveness In Death”, and never letting up for a second. These guys are veterans of the house show-basement party scene, and it shows. It’s like, “Fuck all our problems, let’s fucking jam and drink some beer!!”, which is exactly how I feel when I listen to the band.

“Beasts of Labor” showcases some Death Metal vocals along with precision drumming from Jonah Livingston, and it’s without a doubt the best song on this record. Kallen Bliss and Snake Chuffskin (guitars) simply shine on this track, with riffs aplenty and dual harmonies throughout. The guitar histrionics continue with “Don’t Let This Stay Here” making this one another favorite. “The Life We Choose” is another one in the Death Metal wheelhouse with some killer thrash tones thrown in for good measure while “Walls” is the sonic equivalent of throwing someone through a window. It never lets up.

Vocalist Peter Gallagher has more venom in him than TEN King Cobras and on this release he’s spitting it everywhere. Bassist Ben Powell really shines on “Break In the Chain” reminding us all just how important that role is. I also really enjoyed “Truth to Power” because it’s in-your-face and all FUCK YOU attitude. Working with acclaimed producer and CONVERGE guitarist Kurt Ballou at his GodCity Studios, the grime and grit of this LP is evident. Ballou even lays down a solo on “Horns of War”, giving this kickass band even MORE kickassiness! Closer “Momentary Masters” again exhibits the dual guitar harmonies while Gallagher goes batshit one last time.

If you take nothing else from this review, take this: RAMMING SPEED have achieved a level of greatness with No Epitaphs that many bands strive for, but few attain. This record is simply a must-have for any and all fans of thrash, death, grind, punk, and hardcore. It’s so much fun I almost cut my face off!
