The Devastation On the Nation Tour bulldozed its way into Philly not too long ago, making Voltage Lounge its command post for the evening. Among the brutal and technical death metal acts were co-headliners KRISIUN and ORIGIN, AEON, as well as ALTERBEAST, SOREPTION, the UK’s INGESTED, and local heroes COGNITIVE. Now, pause for a second and let that line-up sink in, dear reader. A night of absolute pummeling lay in store for all those who came out. Me? I’d been looking forward to this one since they announced the show months ago, probably more than any other gig this year, save for MACHINE HEAD back in January.
All seven bands played their fucking asses off, no question. And there was not one bad apple in the bunch. But if I’m picking favorites, COGNITIVE and INGESTED ruled the night. Think of the task the local guys (whose self-titled new album is out now on Pathologically Explicit Recordings) had to undertake, opening for these heavyweights. Not only did they rise to the occasion, they set the bar so high I actually wondered if anyone would match them. With crushing tracks like “Fire From the Sky”, opener “In the Form of a Drone”, and “Regurgitated Existence” these men were clearly on a mission.
INGESTED pretty much said, “I’ll see your venom and raise you some of the most intense pits of the night!” as they tore into “Titanomachy”, followed by “The Divine Right of Kings” from newest album The Architect of Extinction. From 2009’s debut Surpassing the Boundaries of Human Suffering, the one-two punch of “Skinned and Fucked” followed by “Anal Evisceration” closed things out, featuring the most intense wall of death I have seen in YEARS!!
I honestly hadn’t heard much from SOREPTION or ALTERBEAST, other than the newest works (Engineering the Void and Immortal, respectively) but both bands delivered high intensity sets, seeming to go for the knockout punch with every song and leaving it all out there for the fans to eat up. Obviously the mighty AEON stomped a mudhole in the joint, as did both ORIGIN and KRISIUN.
ORIGIN also had some crazy pits and even crazier stagedivers! When all was said and done this was one hell of a night and more than lived up to its billing. Devastation On the Nation was one of THE best tours of 2015, and I can’t fucking wait to see what next year’s roster looks like.
If you missed this tour, you fucked up, plain and simple…
