Insision – Terminal Reckoning

I’ve been sitting on this one for a while, because I was having trouble getting an exact street date, but now that it just came out on New Year’s Day, let me tell you all about Sweden’s punishing Death Metal band INSISION and their brand new album Terminal Reckoning (Sevared Records). Striking fast and hitting hard across eight tracks, these guys are the answer to all these assembly line sound-alike melodic death metal bands from their homeland that are popping up like weeds, and certainly not for the faint of heart. The album artwork sure as shit isn’t either. I need that on a T-shirt ASAP!! With the core of vocalist Carl and guitarist Rogga firmly in place for years they have, despite some line-up changes, worked tirelessly to continually up the ante with each release, something they definitely achieve here.

Immediate standout “Cold Air” is a straight-up asskicking, with drummer Ibrahim and bassist Gustav leading the charge while Rogga and fellow guitarist Adam handle their riff business alongside Carl’s growls. Opener “Among Us” really grabbed my attention from the first notes and the following number “Ominous Spiral” keeps things moving at a high level. Intensity is certainly not a problem for INSISION. Even when they slow the tempo, like on “Old Ways” the guitar work is no less crushing than on some of its counterparts. This also splits the album in two, and is placed perfectly in the tracklisting.

“Infected” and “Shapeshifting” are two of the more fearsome tracks, everyone banging and clanging from Hell to breakfast and back again, with the latter employing some stop-on-a-dime time changes. The alarm sounds at the start of “XXV.II.MMXIV” signal that the end is nigh, and the pummeling that follows only drives the point home harder. “You’re the problem! The taker of human life is the cure!!” These words, spoken by artist Joe Coleman precede closing track and one of my favorites “Resist”, which paints an equally dark and bleak picture, just the way I like it. This isn’t some hippie drum circle, people. This is Death Metal, and it’s here to kick you up the ass, rip your nuts off, and feed ’em to you!!

All told INSISION did an excellent job with Terminal Reckoning. This is one of those records that will warrant multiple spins because once just won’t be enough. The mark of a really good disc is as soon as you finish it, you have to go again. Well, that is definitely the case here. The album’s available now so be sure and pick yours up today.
