“You Will Never Be One Of Us is a title about people who try to latch onto something you’ve been doing and dedicated yourself to and making a mockery out of it. For every person who has dedicated themselves to punk or metal, there’s five people who’ll attach themselves to the same thing with 1/10th of the dedication you have and they truly don’t belong and if these leeches had any self-awareness, they would know that they didn’t belong. These people aren’t interested in growing and learning, but to using something for themselves in a disingenuous way. That’s something that can be spotted 1,000 miles away.”
I thought it was important to include that description featuring a quote from frontman Todd Jones, because it is 100% spot-on. NAILS is a special kind of band, one that plays by its own rules, something that is more and more a rarity these days. This new album is 21:43 of pure, unbridled anger, disdain, and rage and kicks you right in the grapes from the start. With the average song length being a minute and change it’s taking me longer to type this up than the whole thing put together. Is that bad? Absolutely not. It just makes a track-by-track breakdown friggin’ impossible.
So with that in mind, let me just say that what really stood out to me were the title track, eight-minute (yeah, you read that right) closer “They Come Crawling Back”” which is a total slow grinder, and “Made to Make You Fall” from the very first listen. Other highlights include “Life Is a Death Sentence” which gives off a TOXIC HOLOCAUST vibe, as well as “Violence Is Forever”, which is my favorite song for sure. I loved the riff and the pacing. Once again, if I actually worked out, this would be a great tune for the gym playlist. “Savage Intolerance” is a balls-to-the-wall fuckfest, while “Parasite” and “Into Quietus” are like repeated hammer blows to the skull.
Quite frankly, I think this is a great NAILS record. I’m finally seeing them live next week for the first time in Philly, and I couldn’t be more excited. They could actually do this as well as their two previous efforts (Unsilent Death, Abandon All Life) from start to finish and still come in under an hour. Here’s hoping they do! If really strong, angry powerviolence, grind, heavy metal and punk is your bag, then I think you’ll love You Will Never Be One Of Us. It comes out June 17 via Nuclear Blast Records, so grab it then and go nuts!
