Bella D – The Crystal Ceiling

BELLA D is a symphonic rock singer/songwriter who has been slugging it out in clubs for some time and has finally released her debut album The Crystal Ceiling. Her story is one filled with struggle. She’s a survivor of a VERY aggressive form of breast cancer (something that hit very close to home for me) and was diagnosed midway through the recording process. Imagine having to go through chemotherapy and then trying to sing. I give this gal a ton of credit. Not only that, the music is good, damn good.

The Crystal Ceiling is a concept album that tells the story of a female automaton whose main purpose for construction was companionship. Beautiful, smart and charming, BELLA D was crafted almost too well, with a will too strong for captivity. After discovering a portal that transports her to a darkened dystopian New York City, BELLA D soon discovers that her new surroundings are entrenched in war, struggle, and violence. Got all that? OK, so now let’s take a gander at the songs.

Opener “Breaking Free” definitely sets a tone with its crisp riffage and angelic vocals from BELLA D. Plus, the song has serious balls. Next up is “End of the World” and it pretty much picks up where the last track left off. “My Fate Is Survival” is one of those songs that really makes you think about our loved ones. Some of you might not get that, but for me it’s something I hold dear to my heart. “Save Me” would be the perfect song for a movie or TV show because it just flows so well and I think it could be used in a myriad of ways. Title track “The Crystal Ceiling” is another great track that I kept spinning again and again.

Now, I said that BELLA D was a rocker earlier and I meant it. “There’s No Room For You” is one of the album’s best and the band takes care of business from note one. “Danger Truly Dawns” is a very cinematic number that will make you feel it in your chest, believe me. On a more subdued note, the piano-driven “Battle On” is simply a thing of beauty, and closer “Starlight” is one of those songs that will most likely move many of you/us to tears. It’s THAT powerful. The Crystal Ceiling is an awesome debut from BELLA D, and I hope we get to hear more of what she’s got to offer sooner rather than later.
