The Metal Queen DORO On Strong And Proud, 30 Years In Metal, And What The Fans Mean To Her!!

Doro in Moscow 30/05/2015At this point do I even need to remind you maniacs of my love for The Metal Queen, DORO? As her new 3-DVD/+CD Strong and Proud – 30 Years of Rock and Metal is set to hit the U.S. on July 15 via Nuclear Blast Records I was lucky enough, once again, to be on the receiving end of a phone call from The Queen herself to talk about it. We also touched on her guest-starring on AMON AMARTH’S Jomsviking album and when we can expect a new record. So sit right down and join us, won’t you?

Amps: I know you spent hours poring over footage to decide what songs to include on both the DVD and audio CD. How hard was that for you, trying to find just the right moments to share with us?

DORO: It was agonizing trying to pick through the songs and deciding what to keep and what would get cut. So we looked at certain ones where maybe one of us fucked up, or the tuning wasn’t right, and those are the ones we left out. Trust me, if it was up to me every live album would be 25-30 songs (laughs)! We are all professionals, but sometimes mistakes happen, we’re human.

Amps: The thing with live albums is they can either be a great souvenir for the fans who were there, and a way for those who couldn’t make it to rock out at home, or they can fall flat and be boring. You ALWAYS capture that high-energy of a DORO performance and what it was like to be there. You did it in 2011 and totally nailed it with The Cave Concert, which is still my favorite to this day. Bravo!!

Doro - Strong And Proud - ArtworkDORO: Oh, thank you so much, Damian! When you listen to this live album and watch the Wacken concert DVDs I want everyone to feel what it’s like to be there. The sights and sounds, the lights, everything. It makes me so happy. And the documentary is really cool. There’s eight hours of stuff, so if you get bored, you can pause it and walk away, then come back later. And it has done really, really well on the charts in Finland, Sweden, the UK, and in Germany it climbed ahead of iconic bands like U2 and The Rolling Stones! I never imagined it would do so well.

Amps: The day I get bored of ANYTHING DORO-related is the day I jump off a bridge!!

DORO: (Laughing) Well, that’s sweet, but we don’t want that!

Amps: How are things going with the new album, and are we looking to release it in 2017?

DORO: We are hard at work on the new album, going through songs and ideas. I think a 2017 release date will happen, yeah. I wrote a song for Lemmy and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.

Amps: Do you have any cool collaborations planned that we should know about for this one?

DORO: For the new album I want to do something really special with some cool people. I don’t know who it will be yet, but I want to collaborate with someone like I just did with AMON AMARTH.

Amps: I have to tell you that there is NO ONE out there who appreciates their fans the way you do. I have never seen anyone more grateful than you, and I mean that. More bands/artists should be like you. I’m driving down to Baltimore to see you October 1 at Fish Head Cantina and I can’t wait!

DORO NB 3DORO: That is so sweet to hear, thank you so much. I live for the fans, and hanging out with them before and after the shows, whether there are two people or 200 at the gig. I always say “You’re My Family” because it’s true. I love being in the dark and dirty clubs with my family (laughs). I look forward to seeing you in Baltimore in October! Are there any particular songs you’d like to hear?

Amps: “Earthshaker Rock”, because it’s Mini-Amps’ favorite. I was wondering…Do you ever think about just taking a vacation?

DORO: (Laughing) I’ve never taken a vacation, I don’t even know what that feels like.

Amps: I’m trying to picture you on a beach somewhere, sipping some fruity drink out of a pineapple or coconut. And all I can think is that you’d be bored out of your skull!

DORO: I would be the whitest, palest, person looking like death, like a ghost on that beach (laughs)!! I love what I do too much to ever stop. I played a festival on my birthday, and I also did a guest spot with the AMON AMARTH guys at a festival on the song we did together on their record, “A Dream That Cannot Be”. People say, “Don’t you have anything better to do than work on your birthday?” And I tell them that this isn’t work, I love it!

Amps: That song is fantastic and it must have been a lot of fun, no?

DORO: The AMON AMARTH guys are so cool, I love them. Doing the song was so much fun. I love their Viking Metal.

Amps: Me, too! That’s probably gonna end up being my Album of the Year. It’s incredible.

DORO: Yeah, I’m with you on that. I agree with you that this is probably the Metal Album of the Year, Damian!!

Amps: What would you like to say to the Worldwide DORO Family?

DORO: To all the fans out there, I will never do a “Goodbye Tour” or anything like that because I’m gonna keep doing this till I die. I love you all so much Für Immer, and I’ll keep playing shows as long as you want to come see me. I look forward to seeing all of you at the summer festivals and all the clubs. Stay happy, stay healthy, stay METAL!!

Just so’s you guys all know: This phone call happened TODAY just as I was pulling into my driveway after picking up Mini-Amps from his first day of summer camp. As you’re well aware she always leaves a message for him at the end of our interviews, something she doesn’t have to do…she WANTS to do. Well this time he got to hear her while she was on the phone and he lit up like a Christmas Tree. There is no one out there who lives and dies for the metal music and the fans the way DORO does. She is a class act through and through, and I can’t wait for the Baltimore show October 1. Get your tickets HERE, and if you’re gonna be there, look for the short dude at the barricade screaming like a lunatic while hopping up and down and come say “Hey”!
