Swedish Death Metal stalwarts PAGANIZER return with a brand new EP On the Outskirts of Hades, out now on Transcending Obscurity Records. It’s safe to say that this is and Unique Leader are my favorite labels for extreme metal music, so every time one of these bands hits my inbox I get pretty excited (if past write-ups on EXALTER, STRANGULATE, THIRD SOVEREIGN, and my latest review of WIRED ANXIETY are any sort of indication!) Now, I’m not gonna pretend I knew anything about these guys before, but I sure am glad they’re in my life now!
Killer song structures, crushing riffs, and the menacing, gruesome vocals from Rogga Johansson (who also recently dropped an album with one of his million other bands RIBSPREADER!) make for an intense listen across four blistering tracks. “Angry All the Time” kicks this bitch off in head-pummeling fashion, and the band lets it rip from beginning to end. For “Adjacent to Purgatory” the band hits the gas and drives right into you…and then right through you, leaving you as roadkill for the vultures. What’s great about this also is that Martin Klasen’s bass and Matte Fiebig’s drums are nice and high in the mix, as they should be.
There’s a shift in tempo and groove that introduces “The Netherworld Carnivale”. But soon it too takes off like a rocket before hitting the brakes and watching bodies fly through the windshield. There’s some especially good lead guitar work from Kjetil Lynghaug here as well. Closing out this way-too-short EP (and that’s only because I wanted more!) is the title track which is the embodiment of the classic Florida Death Metal sound we all love so much. The bottom line is this: PAGANIZER knocked it out of the park with this disc, and I can’t wait till their next full-length album.
