“Jesus Fucking Christ…” was all I could utter after the first listen through. I haven’t been punched in the face by an album in a hot minute, and this changed that fact completely. This is definitely one of those breakdown-heavy releases, so if you’re not a fan of those…Well there’s actually still a lot of shit for you, and anyone else for that matter, on Laugh Tracks (out now, Pure Noise Records) the new album from super-goddamn-insanely-heavy-ass-band KNOCKED LOOSE.
Heavy music can get boring pretty quickly. Intro, breakdown, chorus (maybe), breakdown end; is the usual format for “core” metal bands. Not KNOCKED LOOSE though. You can’t stick them with one niche. By the time you’ve assigned a pattern to whatever’s happening in their music, they’re already SMASHING into something completely different, and I fucking LOVE that. These songs include some straight up death metal-esque leads that drop into hardcore 2 step grooves, which give way to tendon ripping breakdowns. It’s like they took the best parts of a shit-ton of sub genres and mashed them all together.
It’s hard to deny that these boys have something special going on with their tunes. It sounds like…Them. That’s the only way to describe it. Yeah I could point out parts of some songs that sound kinda similar to other bands over the years, but even then, it’s still undeniably KNOCKED LOOSE. They have that potent ability to strike a nerve when you hear them, and conjure a feeling as you listen through. That’s what REAL music with raw power does. It moves you. In whatever direction it may be, it fucking moves you.
Not only is the songwriting top notch, but just listen to the quality of the sound engineering. Holy. Actual. Fuck. The mix on this album has a 5 gallon bucket full of balls, and it swings ’em everywhere. It’s so raw and out of control sounding, but in just the right way. Everything is where it needs to be. It has that perfect balance between “real” and “processed” that is SO hard to capture, and usually only comes from truly talented musicians. This is shit I get excited about. A truly ravenous body of work that makes me want to get up and move…and hit people…and throw things.
KNOCKED LOOSE have a very unique and interesting chemistry, and I’ll be very happy to see it continue in the future. If you notice some of my past reviews, I have a special place for artists who put ‘attitude’ on their tracks, and these guys have it in fucking droves. With a debut album as pissed off as this, I can’t even imagine what kind of musical ass whooping they have in store for us next time.
