few might be HE IS LEGEND’S best record to date. That’s one of the many thoughts that was going through my head as my ears absorbed the goodness that is this newest album. Their last offering, Heavy Fruit didn’t sit well with me. It seemed overdone and not as memorable as previous releases. Maybe this is because my first HIL record was I Am Hollywood. In any case, few (out now, Spinefarm Records) redeems the band and shows that they still have what made them most excellent in the first place, while branching out their repertoire.
Songs on this record still have those heavy southern tones (“Air Raid”), while others are sludgy goodness (“The Garden”), while finally some remind me of Peter Gabriel (“Call Ins”). It’s a wonderful mix and something that the band and fans alike should be exceptionally proud of.
One of my favorite songs on the album is the aforementioned “The Garden” because it’s a phenomenal closer and I feel that it would be one that when it’s played in person will translate extremely well to a live audience. HE IS LEGEND has returned to their roots, while still managing to branch out. It’s refreshing for an older band to still be great at what they do, while finding new ways to spice things up.
