Seven songs. Fourteen minutes. That is the running time of EXPULSION’S debut disc, Nightmare Future (out now, Relapse Records). And guess what? That’s all the time they need to fuck your shit up. Consisting of Matt Harvey (GRUESOME) on vocals, Matt Olivo (REPULSION) on guitar, drummer Danny Walker (INTRONAUT, EXHUMED, PHOBIA), and bassist Menno Verbaten (LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH), this is a brief, though still epic journey into the Grindcore days of yore. With Olivo in the producer’s chair and mixing done by TOXIC HOLOCAUST’S Joel Grind, this is quite frankly a splendid exercise in filth.
And you know what? That’s what makes it so fucking cool!! Much like last year’s NAILS album You Will Never Be One of Us, this is a record that gets in, kicks you in the balls with a steel-toed boot, then leaves you gasping for breath on a dirty beer, sweat, and urine-soaked floor. Which is exactly what this stuff is SUPPOSED to do, right? Tracks like “Total Human Genocide” and the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it speed of “Altar of Slaughter” are guaranteed to not only get people moving, but also breaking shit and throwing stuff in the process.
“Mask of Fear” is quick and dirty, like a sexual encounter in the Port Authority bathrooms, while title track “Nightmare Future” has the distinction of being the longest song on the record at 2:41. The riff on this one is super-conducive to headbanging, neck injuries be damned. “Funeral Bells” was definitely the runaway favorite because in addition to being nasty as hell, it also has a TOXIC HOLOCAUST vibe to it, and a couple of time changes. Blast beats are in full effect for “Compulsions” and closer “Comatose” is easily the nastiest other favorite tune found here.
At the end of the day you can use any words you want to describe this thing: dirty, muddy, filthy, yucky, oozing, slimy, you get the idea. But this album Nightmare Future is guaranteed to fuck your world up from the first note to the last. Again, clocking in at only 14 minutes, it does the job of elevating your heart rate and wrecking everything in its path. And anyone who loves their Grind, Crust, and Punk will fucking love this disc. So what are you waiting for? Go get this bitch, put it in your CD player and then go break some goddamn windows in EXPULSION’S name!!
