Epica, Lacuna Coil, and Insomnium Live Vol. II: The Trocadero – Philadelphia, PA 9/28/17

EPICA is touring with LACUNA COIL, INSOMNIUM, and ELANTRIS for The Ultimate Principle Tour. As usual at The Trocodero in Philadelphia the show starts promptly; unfortunately for the first band and fans this means most of us listen to them from the sidewalk while they slowly move people down the block and pat everyone down. ELANTRIS from Lisbon, Ohio started the show.

Soon after they finished their set, INSOMNIUM took the stage. They’re a melodic death metal band from Joensuu, Finland. They have a fantastic sound, with two different styles of vocals. Bass player, Niilo Sevänen performs the growling death metal style vocals while guitarist Ville Friman sings the clean ones. Their music is epic in the traditional sense of the word. Their most recent album Winter’s Gate is one forty-minute track (in seven parts in some formats) about a Viking voyage.

Next LACUNA COIL welcomed us to their sanitarium. The Italian goth metal band had backdrops and straight jacket costumes to look like they were in a terrifying mental institution complete with crazy writing and blood splatter. LACUNA COIL has two lead singers, Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro, that both sing parts in each song. About half of the set was from their most recent album Delirium which was released in May of 2016. They put on an awesome performance every time!

Then the stage was set for EPICA! The female-fronted six piece symphonic metal band from the Netherlands is amazing. Lead singer Simone Simons has a beautiful operatic voice, backed by heavy guitars, which makes for a truly unique sound. The band moved around the stage with a lot of energy, even the keyboardist, Coen Janssen. His keyboard is on wheels and spins! The band played a song from their new EP The Solace System called “Wheel of Destiny”.

Cristina Scabbia returned to the stage to perform “Storm the Sorrow” with the band. They ended the show with a three song encore which included “Sancta Terra”, “Beyond the Matrix” and “Consign to Oblivion”. The North American leg of the tour is over and now they are heading back to Europe for several more shows!
