I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The Deathcore genre of Heavy Metal is full of copycats, soundalikes, and clones. That is an undeniable fact. Hence why I only like a few bands of this ilk. THY ART IS MURDER is one that I’m a big fan of, and for the past two years now I’ve also been on board the BURIED ABOVE GROUND train. There’s something very different about what they’re doing. I reviewed 2016’s Birth EP. Spoiler alert: I loved it! So I was obviously pretty amped to get the new one The Crown (April 10, Seek and Strike) in my mailbox recently. It actually showed up on a really shitty day, and turned out to be the cure for what ailed me.
Starting out with title track “The Crown” the band wastes no time getting down to the business of fucking shit up with a quickness. Imagine someone’s head being crushed in by repeated blows from a sledgehammer and you’ll get the idea. Next up is one of my two favorites in “You Bleed So Beautiful.’ This one is not only eerie at the start, but it builds and builds to a crescendo, something I love. Vocalist Eric McMahon sounds especially vicious here, and DJ Gunnarson’s guitar is excellent. Plus he unleashes an outstanding solo on this track. The triphammer drums from Sam “Digg” Flach coupled with Coz’s bass add another dimension as well.
The programming behind these tunes is also well done. It’s simple and understated, and never once does it overpower or detract from the heaviness. This is also handled by Coz, and he’s got a good ear for it. The ambience is especially noticeable on “Sin Eater” and “Doomed to Drown,” two songs that wouldn’t be out of place on a serial killer’s playlist. Or mine. Closer “March to the Gallows” is my other favorite because it’s thick as hell, the guitars, bass, and drums are in lockstep, and around the 2;30 mark it’s like they tear the kitchen sink loose and throw it at your goddamn head.
Overall I was once again highly impressed with this EP. It’s actually even better than its predecessor. 2018 promises to be a big year for BURIED ABOVE GROUND. They are about to embark on a national tour supporting CARNIFEX, and I have a strong feeling that once they get out and play these songs in front of the masses they’ll be earning legions of new fans night after night. Be sure and get your copy of The Crown on release day. And also, get off your ass and go check these guys out live, yeah?
