Now, Now’s KC Dalager Chats With A&GS About New Album Saved and More!!

I’ve spent a lot of time gushing over NOW, NOW and their new album Saved (out now, Trans Records) this year, and with good reason. I already loved the band before they released this newest masterpiece; now my love has increased tenfold.

I was fortunate enough to get some time with vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist KC Dalager and ask her some questions. And I’m so glad I did. This gave me a glimpse into what makes them tick as a band, and also allowed me to see them in a different light. Have a look:

Amps: If you and Bradley (Hale, drums/backing vocals) aren’t aware of it by now, you have released one of THE greatest albums of 2018, and arguably the best of your career with Saved. How does it feel to see the fruits of your labors not only come to life, but to near universal acclaim?

KC: Thank you, that means a lot to us. It feels very rewarding and very strange to have it finally be released. I think it’s our best work and I’ve never felt more proud of anything we’ve created. That’s my main concern with putting out music. So the fact that we made something we love that other people can also love and feel connected to is very motivating.

Amps: What can the fans expect from your live show this tour?

KC: It’s always very difficult to answer this question. Like someone asking, “And what can someone expect when they meet you?” You know what I mean? It’s hard for us to answer that about ourselves because we are so close to it. But hopefully it can be engaging and intimate and fun.

Amps: From a writing standpoint, when do feel most inspired? Is it a certain time of day, or do you just write when the mood hits you?

OR...are you standing in the frozen food aisle humming melodies into your phone?

KC: Writing can strike anywhere. There is no rhyme or reason for me. I usually have to feel overwhelmed and drowning in whatever emotion I’m feeling (good or bad) to be able to write. So whenever I’m feeling that way. But no particular time of day or location haha.

Amps: My absolute favorite track is “AZ.” Do you have any favorites, or are they all your babies?

KC: They all hold a special place in my heart. I love them all equally. Which is something I’ve never been able to say before.

Amps: Away from music, what do you like to do so you can relax and unwind?

KC: We really don’t do anything else other than work. But we like to go bowling if we are going out. We watch Ghost Adventures and RuPaul’s Drag Race together. And we play video games – Zelda and Destiny. And hang out with my cat, Sprout.

Amps: What is in your CD player or iPod right now? Old stuff, new stuff, rock, pop, polka??

KC: Grimes, Charli XCX, Bully, Yoko Ono, Chelsea Jade, So Below, Julia Michaels, movie soundtracks, and I love taiko drums/traditional Japanese music. I recently have been listening to Michelle Branch a lot again. I also just got into The Carpenters.

Amps: I love, love, love The Carpenters! In this age of Wikipedia and Google, what is something that people maybe don’t know about the band?

KC: Ummmmm, this is tough. A lot of it is already out there. When we first started writing together, I played drums. I had just decided to play guitar a couple months prior to us forming. I only knew how to play percussion my whole life until I was 15. Brad grew up playing piano at a church near his house.

Amps: Do you ever check out some of the YouTube covers of your songs? My friend Tiaday Ball from THE WORLD OVER does a fantastic one of “SGL.”

KC: Sometimes we do! I don’t really like to get too sucked into the internet or YouTube when it comes to the band because it’s a scary place. Never know when you’ll stumble across a comment that will ruin your day. But we see some and it’s very flattering and sweet.

Amps: Now that Saved is released, what would you like the listener to take away from it as the last notes of “Powder” ring out?

KC: We would like anyone listening to get lost in our world. To feel fully submerged. And maybe make whoever is listening to feel connected with themselves and their feelings.

Amps: QUICK! Don’t think, just answer: Favorite movie? Favorite food? Favorite book? (That was the speed round, btw)

KC: Never Been Kissed/Avatar/Inception/Harry Potter/Risky Business, rice/chips/fruit/coffee, His Dark Materials trilogy/Harry Potter/Childhood’s End/MLK autobiography

Amps: Lastly, what would you like to say to all the NOW, NOW fans out there in the world?

KC: Thank you for caring about us. Be nice to your moms and grandparents. Be nice to animals.

I’ve said it a hundred times since Saved came out; it’s without a doubt one of my favorites of 2018. KC said that she needs to be overwhelmed by emotion in order to write. Well, that’s exactly what will happen to you as you immerse yourself in this record. I’m so glad that I was able to speak with KC, as the art she creates alongside Bradley in NOW, NOW has truly captivated not only my ears, but my heart as well. I’m seeing them live here in Philly at Johnny Brenda’s on Friday night and I couldn’t be more excited and nervous all at the same time.
