Abhorrent Deformity – Slaughter Monolith

ABHORRENT DEFORMITY is back with album number two, Slaughter Monolith (out now, Comatose Music). Lemme tell ya, these boys from North Carolina can fucking throw down. They’ve got the bludgeoning part nailed, that’s for sure. And they’re certainly no slouches technically, either. The whole band attacks with an almost surgical precision, and the vigor with which these songs are performed is welcomed. I’ve had about two months to sit with this one, so I know it inside and out due to repeat listens (pssst, that’s a good thing, guys). And for the most part I really enjoyed, and am still enjoying the record.

After the intro track “Symptom Conception” (fuck, I HATE intros!!) the disc starts in earnest with the brutalizing “Sexually Transmitted Coma.” After I got done smiling at the title and listened I was fully onboard. The band is in full sonic beatdown mode, and the results are nothing short of glorious. “Ripped From a Mother’s Mutilated Womb” is definitely one of the fiercest tracks, while “The 2016 Esoteric Model” showcases some really effective gutturals from vocalist Mark De Gruchy. He sounds like he’s ready to put you through the meat grinder so he can have his dinner.

The next two songs, “Three Piece Flesh Suit” and “Of Blood and Cum” have to be my favorites, not only because they fucking rip through you, but those titles are goddamn awesome! Plus, the drumming/ blast beats on “Cum”….woooooooo, doggy! From here though, things do get a little bit repetitive with “The Fine Art of Amputation” It doesn’t sound any different from what we’ve heard up till this point, but “Swamp of Intestines” gets us back on track nicely while also managing to be another favorite. I have to ask though, “Why, oh why is there a 56-second interlude after this awesome track?” Way to derail momentum, fellas!

Moving on, we come to “Purification Through Bodily Dismemberment” which is another bright spot, and then “Vermin Burial”, which like the track before it only clocks in around 2:30. Still, they’re short and sweet, and they get the goddamn job done. Closing things out is “Unspeakable Perversity”, which finds the band going for the walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth. Do they connect? I’ll leave that up to you. Overall my first ABHORRENT DEFORMITY experience was a good one. Slaughter Monolith is a carnivorous monster with rows of razor sharp teeth that I thoroughly enjoyed. Just nix the intros and interludes next time. And mix it up a little more.
