Okay, it’s time to shake off all the Christmas cobwebs with a good old fashioned dose of Death Metal. When I received the press release about Swedish band FERAL I was very intrigued, having never heard them before. They are set to drop a new album on us very soon, like December 30 soon via Transcending Obscurity Records, and that beast is called Flesh For Funerals Eternal. If you love Old School Death Metal, then this is definitely one you’re gonna wanna listen to. I’ve had it on here at A&GS HQ for a few days now, and every time I spin it I love it even more. Hell, it jumped onto the Honorable Mentions portion of my 2018 Top Albums list at the eleventh hour, so there’s that.
The opening salvo of “Vaults of Undead Horror” and “Black Coven Secrets” will kick you in the balls, bloody your lips, and blacken your eyes, and then “Dormant Disease” will come in and finish you the fuck off. And you will thank them for it. The production on the disc is just dirty enough without being too muddy. You can hear everyone nicely in the mix, from guitars to bass to vocals, something that isn’t always easy to get right. Speaking of vocals, I really like David Nilsson’s, especially his delivery. This is a guy I could rock out to all day, quite honestly. His voice gives the songs an extra dose of ferocity.
Other album highlights for me were “Horrendous Sight,” with its killer riffs and breakneck pace, as well as closer “Bled Dry.” Now that one is like a straight up beatdown for 2:40 and is a great way to cap the record off. I also really dug “Of Gods No Longer Involved.” In fact, that might be my next ringtone. All in all I was very, very impressed by my first FERAL go-round, and I think fans of Death Metal, whether you like it more brutal or technical, will enjoy this record. Transcending Obscurity Records is my favorite extreme metal label for a reason, and this was an excellent signing. You can pre-order now or pick up Flesh For Funerals Eternal on December 30 HERE. If you’re smart, you’ll get on that posthaste!!
