While She Sleeps – So What?

There’s not a whole lot of rock n’ roll out there these days. At least, nothing that’s not a 100% LED ZEPPELIN rip-off or whatever. I’ve seen a very small revival with some bands doing some really kickass stuff, and it seems like the movement is picking up speed, which makes me a happy goddamn camper. Enter: WHILE SHE SLEEPS, a U.K. band that’s been consistently throwing 1-2 punches at the music industry for a while now.

I do want to start off by saying So What? (out now, Sleeps Brothers/Spinefarm Records) is not my favorite record of theirs, but it’s certainly not a bad piece of work by any means. It seems to have lost that “anthem” feel that I believe gave a lot of their older work so much monumental power and energy to rally behind. There are riffs aplenty, choruses to throw up a lighter to, and some pretty goddamn angry breakdowns lurking in here that provide a bit of fun to be had for the listener. I’ve also noticed a significant uptake in production elements like chopped vocal samples and synths that impart another layer of ear candy for the listener to digest which is something I appreciate personally.

I’m honestly struggling for words at this point though. I’ve been sitting on this record for somewhere around a week and I can’t seem to find a really hard hitting moment that wowed me, or made the record pop in a fantastic fashion. Most records have that one song that sticks out like a sore thumb because it’s super fucking good (a lot of the times it’s not one of the singles), but this just… doesn’t make me want to fling around a WSS flag like some of the older material.

Again, I feel the need to reiterate, WHILE SHE SLEEPS is a good motherfucking band. Those gents can shred ass as a group, and each member of that band is an absolute weapon on their instruments, but not every record by every band is going to be a perfect amalgamation of what they’ve been through, or how they’ve developed. Sometimes, you’re just gonna slightly miss the mark. My point still stands though, they’re on the target regardless, it’s just not on the bulls-eye for me this time.
