BEYOND THE BLACK is a Symphonic/Power Metal band that has been around for several years now. However, they just got on my radar, and quite frankly I think they’re really fucking good! They have a new album HØRIZØNS out now on Napalm Records. Want a perfect example of what they can do? Listen to “Misery.” Holy Hell, this song is not only awesome, but it is very uplifting and anthemic. You can hear the conviction in singer Jennifer Haben’s voice, and the track is a driving force. “Wounded Healer” boasts a guest appearance from fellow powerhouse vocalist Elize Ryd, who needs no introduction in AMARANTHE, and the results are glorious.
“Some Kind of Monster” manages to be anthemic, and it delivers a great message that we all need to take heed of. Meanwhile “Human” has a cowboy-tinged feel, and you can’t help but wonder if the posse is a-comin’. Once it all kicks in though, that posse just might be in the house doing shots like the rest of us. Haben is such a great singer, and she makes this one a very great track, and it seems effortless. “Golden Pariahs” is equal parts piss and vinegar while also being another fist-pumping number. Mein Gott, I would love to see this band live just to watch the greatness unfold!
“You’re Not Alone” is a groover that will get heads a-bobbin’, and “Paralyzed” goes to the races, while having one of the hookiest hooks on the whole thing. There is a palpable anticipation as to what’s gonna happen with “Coming Home” and Jeezus, is it majestic. Fucking amazing! Piano ballad “I Won’t Surrender” is beautiful, and once again Haben leaves it all out on the field. You can hear conviction and belief in her voice, and I’m pretty sure when she recorded it she knew that would come across. The same can be said about “Out of the Ashes.” The whole band comes together like a well-oiled machine, and they know they’ve got a good one right here.
Now, let’s talk about “Welcome to My Wasteland,” album closer and sonic face-puncher. Seriously, if you’re not all in on this tune I question your sanity. Look, at the end of the day the new BEYOND THE BLACK album spoke to me. I think HØRIZØNS is an excellent fucking record, Jennifer Haben is a phenomenal fucking singer, and this band is totally fucking great. I can’t wait to hear more from them. Get your copy of HØRIZØNS ASAP, then enjoy the music!!
