Who here is waiting for a hammer to be brought down on their goddamn heads, huh? Please don’t act like you’re not. If you like death metal then it’s a given you like KATAKLYSM. And if you don’t, well then, that’s your issue not ours. But for those of us in the know, these Canadian boys are fixing to drop a new album titled Unconquered (September 25, Nuclear Blast Records) and oh boy, there will be blood. Right from jump, the one-two punch of “The Killshot” and “Cut Me Down” will have you on the canvas in no time. In fact, you might wanna stay down, because this record is coming for you like Clubber Lang in Rocky III.
Sticking with the boxing references, the Undisputed Heavyweight Champ of this disc is without a doubt “Underneath the Scars” and that’s a fact. Man alive, I’m ready to run through a brick wall every time I hear this one! This track is right up there with “The Last Breath I’ll Take Is Yours” from the Meditations album as far as favorite songs from these guys go. And they follow that up with “Focused to Destroy You”, another sonic punch to the gut as well as another favorite. The steady, deliberate pacing of “The Way Back Home” only adds to the musical flavoring, while “Stitches” truly highlights the melody and punch this band is capable of delivering time and time again.
Power and unrelenting fury are the order of the day for “Defiant,” while a piano introduces the start of “Icarus Falling” and can be heard through roughly the first minute, giving way to angry, sharp riffs. Closer “When It’s Over” slices and dices from start to finish, adding in a dash of breakdowns for good measure. This is a pretty short album, put it’s jam packed with songs full of metal badassery. If you’re looking for a record that goes well with your gym workout, or whatever activity gets your blood pumping, then look no further. Because this fucker goes, and goes HARD!
