Napalm Death – Throes Of Joy In The Jaws Of Defeatism

NAPALM DEATH return after a five year absence with brand new album Throes of Joy In the Jaws of Defeatism, out now on Century Media Records. Well, that title is certainly a handful. Then again, so is the record itself. Unbridled aggression permeates most of it, and with the exception of one song, this thing is guaranteed to be a baseball bat to the head. The other is a rather stealthy and poisonous affair. Still, the tunes and overall flow of the record are very cohesive, something that should appeal to fans old and new. Plus, the subject matter has never been more relevant as it is right now in this broken and divided country.

Barney Greenway’s vocals simply cut glass on tracks like “Backlash Just Because”, and “Contagion”, opener “Fuck the Factoid”, and many more. The band sounds pissed off and ready to fuck shit up from the very first second. Guitarist Mitch Harris delivers buzzsaw riff after riff, while Danny Herrera (drums) and Shane Embury (bass, backing vocals) bring their low end thunder and big swinging balls to each and every track. Embury played a HUGE part in the songwriting, and that’s awesome. “Joie De Ne Pas Vevre” goes right from first to fifth gear, while “Invigorating Clutch” is more of a simmering pot boiler. You’re not sure where it’s going at first, but you’ll find out soon.

“Zero Gravitas Chamber” is without a doubt one of the best songs on this disc; the band goes fucking nuts, and Greenway’s vocals only make the nuttiness better. “Fluxing of the Muscle” is so meaty it belongs in a butcher shop. And if you don’t wreck your neck headbanging to it, I pity you, I really do. I can’t lie, “Amoral” is 100% my favorite tune on this whole thing. It’s awesome, and truly stands out from the pack. Just listen and you’ll see why. The title track is an all-out assault on your musical senses, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad by any means. “Acting In Gouged Faith” sounds raw and visceral, like a vampire who hasn’t fed in awhile.

Here we go with closer “A Bellyful of Salt and Spleen”, right? Hey, when this was first released I was all, “What the FUCK is this?!?” But the more I listened, the more I got into it. And now I love the motherfucker. Crazy, yeah? So look, NAPALM DEATH have given us a fucking great album with Throes of Joy In the Jaws of Defeatism. And I am very happy to recommend this one to every Grindcore and Death Metal fan I know, you hear me? Pick this one up ASAP!!
