The Americans: Season 1

The thing I love most about The Americans ( FX WEDS 10 pm EST) is that there is never a dull moment. Quite the opposite, actually. Without relying on effects-laden silliness, or bad dialogue, this manages to be a thrill-a-minute!!

Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys play Elizabeth and Phillip Jennings, KGB spies living among us in the early 80’s at the height of the Cold War. They are your typical Americans to a T, and therefore can carry out their clandestine ops largely undetected.

However, they’ve caught the interest of Stan Beeman (expertly played by Noah Emmerich), the FBI Agent across the street who knows something’s not right, but can’t prove it. Emmerich is one of the most brilliant actors I have ever seen, and he truly shines in this role.

Another bright spot is Annet Mahendru as Nina, Beeman’s mole in the Rezidentura. She owns every scene she is in, and will be one to watch for years.

The show is fraught with tension and suspense each and every week, and in its first season, feels like something we’ve been anxiously watching for years.

I won’t say any more, other than to scold those of you who aren’t watching this on a regular basis. Shame on you.

RATING: 10/10

  1. I agree 100% with your review. This show is never dull. I wasn’t sure what to expect from it after seeing FX’s trailers, but it’s definitely worth setting aside that Wednesday 10PM time slot!!
