Welcome to the first installment of what we hope will be a long-running segment: Classic Albums. Here we will discuss great hard rock/heavy metal albums from days of yore, and take a ride down memory lane. Won’t you join us?
I knew right away that I wanted to get things going with some Judas Priest, so without further ado…
Defenders Of the Faith.
This is my favorite Priest album and my SECOND FAVORITE ALBUM IN THE WORLD!!! Each track still burns with the red hot molten metal fire it was forged in to this very day and I can never get enough of them.
“Freewheel Burning”, “Jawbreaker”, “Rock Hard, Ride Free”, and especially “The Sentinel” with its 7-part lead trade-off between Glenn and K.K. are in-your-face rockers that don’t let up for one minute.
Side 2 (That’s right! I went there!) opens with Ian Hill’s ominous bass intro to “Love Bites” and the sexual frenzy of “Eat Me Alive” (Halford says he was very drunk when he wrote it!) before changing the pace with “Night Comes Down”. It’s not a ballad, it’s a very heartfelt song and you can hear the longing in Rob’s singing. And who can forget the sheer heavy-meets-hookiness of “Some Heads Are Gonna Roll”??
Finally, the slow, crunching grind of “Heavy Duty/Defenders Of the Faith” ends things on a rather anthemic high, and is one of my all-time favorite Judas Priest songs. I ran around singing it for weeks when I was 13!
Overall, this is one of the best heavy metal albums ever recorded, and an absolute great way to introduce the power, the fury, and majesty that IS Judas Priest to the uninitiated. A must-have for any collection!
