YÜTH FOREVER – Freudian Slip

Do you like eclectic noises that crawl up your spine and make you feel like you’re slowly being suffocated by the empty nothingness that comes after your inevitable death? Do you like lyrical content and vocal delivery that makes your mind uneasy, and causes you to realize how truly alone you are in this horrible cold world? Then boy oh boy do I have a fucking album for you!

Freudian Slip is the sophomore release from spastic down-tempo gurus YÜTH FOREVER (Previously named VILLAINS). On their prior album, there was a lot of riff work involved, and the songs seemed to each stand on their own right; but on the new one… There’s only one way I can describe it… A coherent clusterfuck. Like someone set off a strategically mapped out sonic mine-field. There’s so much going on all the time, but it’s still so basic, and raw, which is something I love. These boys have managed to find a way to deliver their haunting message, while still being so intensely creative. I’ve found that it’s incredibly hard to properly balance the use of effects on instruments, while still keeping some sort of songwriting that doesn’t sound too gimmicky or played out (see almost any MEMPHIS MAY FIRE release ever made in the history of ever) but these guys managed to almost make the effects a dedicated part of the instrumentation, which is unique, and definitely puts them out in front of the pack.

Honestly, there’s not really a bad thing to say about this album. I mean, sure the lyrical themes are a bit repetitive, but that’s part of the writing, and the message within it. The thing about this is, I can’t pick any song that stands out on its own. Now, while that may seem like a bit of a bad thing, it’s really not. That just means that the entire record is one seamless piece of art. We get a whole lot of singles these days, and that’s lovely, but it’s a rare occasion when listeners are gifted with a musical canvas that has no seams or gaps. I personally like it when I can jam the whole album from front to back, and I don’t feel the need to harp on one or two bits of it. So whatever you do, don’t miss this ballistic permutation of heavy music. It’s fucking awesome. Freudian Slip releases on July 24 via Prosthetic Records.
