Broken Hope – Mutilated And Assimilated

So far 2017 has given us some amazing Death Metal records from the likes of HOUR OF PENANCE, IN DEATH…, ENTRAILS, SUFFOCATION, and DYING FETUS. Oh, and we still have music from ORIGIN and DECREPIT BIRTH to look forward to next month. And smack dab in the middle of all this death metally goodness, is the brand new album Mutilated and Assimilated from longtime masters of the game BROKEN HOPE, out June 23 via Century Media Records. Not sure how much more my head and and heart can take. Hot damn, this year rules, and we’re only into June!!

This is the second outing to feature Damian Leski on vocals, and I am a big fan of his style of extreme metal growls and delivery. Plus we share the same first name AND he even spells it the right way, so how can I not love the guy, right? Founding member and rhythm guitarist Jeremy Wagner is joined by fellow six-stringer Matt Szlachta handling lead duties, with Diego Soria (bass) and Mike Miczek (drums) holding down the rhythm section. As a unit these guys are certainly a well-oiled machine and the songs hook off on you early and often, while still retaining the necessary brutality.

Right away the title track became a favorite, and it really showcases the dual guitar work nicely. Opener “The Meek Shall Inherit Shit” has a great harmonized lead section at the start and bashes your face in for 2:31. It’s short and to the point. “Outback Incest Clan” is clearly a citizen of Blast Beats, USA, which is a good thing, while “Hell’s Handpuppets” opens with slow, clean electric and acoustic guitars before it puts a size 12 boot up yer ass for the duration. Leski sounds like he’s gargling blood at times on this one. “Malicious Meatholes” opens with an exchange from the movie Maps to the Stars which not only made me love the song more, but now I have to see this film!

“The Bunker” is the sonic equivalent of an M-60 machine gun ripping through everything and spilling blood everywhere, while “Blast Frozen” has one of the most unique arrangements on the whole thing. Count this as another standout on an album largely full of them. “The Carrion Eaters” is full-on carnage, as are “Russian Sleep Experiment” and closer “Swamped In Gorehog,” Leski again carrying this one with his soul-crushing growls. Overall Mutilated and Assimilated is a dark, meaty, dirty, and gory Death Metal record that should please all the fans, old and new. It may have taken four years, but consider BROKEN HOPE back with a vengeance!!
